Video: Rimac Concept_One Obliterates A Porsche 918 Spyder

For those that know me, you are well familiar with the fact that I dislike current electric car drama. Yes, there you go, I said it. I fucking hate the personal self gratification and back padding that arises from Tesla Model S ownership – and that’s not a knock on the car itself. I also literally wanna puke when people start talking about who Tesla beat and who did what on a straight line.

It’s again, not a knock on the Tesla Model S … and the same principle can be pointed to my somewhat disliking of the Rimac Concept_One, for that matter.

To cut the story short, until now Rimac, coming from my home country is that elusive supercar maker that nobody saw do a high-speed run. Ever.

Literally speaking, the vehicle was driven on public roads and some videos were released. But I could of (like most people) given less fucks about that, since it wasn’t really showing us the goods. The goods being about the whopping 1,088 horsepower, 1600Nm of torque and a 0-62mph (0-100km/h) run in 2.6 seconds. As a disclaimer, I didn’t really pay attention that much, but from what I saw, not a lot of tests backing those numbers up were done. Now, the time has finally come to shut everyone’s mouth, the right way – with a racing video that is. Yes, yes, me included.

The idea behind this test run is to compare the Concept_One with one of the best performing supercars in the world; the Porsche 918 Spyder.

After getting the green light from the US-based owner of the beautiful grey Concept_One, it was time to find a suitable competitor. The first to challenge the Concept_One against the 918 was Alejandro Salomondrin. Unfortunately, this happened during the Monterey Car Week. Alejandro got to drive the Concept_One for a few days, but as everything is buzzing in Monterey during the Car Week it was impossible to get hold of an adequate piece of track or runway to race it against a 918 Spyder, before the Rimac Automobili people headed back home.

After a few weeks of negotiations, the two cars were finally pitted against each other on a drag strip, somewhere in Michigan.

To cut the long story short, the Rimac Concept_One obliterated the Porsche 918 completely! Yes, I’m a die-hard Porsche 911 guy and love eveeeerything Porsche makes, but this is a clear victory for the all-electric supercar, no doubt about it. Rimac did a great job. Plain and simple.

On the other hand, the Concept_One does have over 200 horsepower more and some people are already debating the style/driving angle done by Solomondrin during those runs. But hey, let’s not open that can of worms just yet.
