The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Is AMG’s First Real SUV, and It Charges Faster Than Its Sedan Sibling

For 59 years, every SUV wearing an AMG badge started life as a regular Mercedes-Benz. The new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV ends that tradition. It is the first full-size SUV AMG has developed entirely in-house, the second car on the dedicated AMG.EA electric platform after the GT 4-Door Coupé, and in GT 63 form it makes 1,153 hp (860 kW) and 2,000 Nm (1,475 lb-ft) of torque. That is more than the AMG One hypercar.

The twist is that the SUV doesn’t just borrow the sedan’s hardware, it improves on it, with a bigger optional battery and faster peak charging. The entry-level GT 53 SUV opens for orders in Germany on October 20, priced from €113,050, with the GT 55 and GT 63 following in spring 2027. US buyers get it as a 2028 model in summer 2027.

Three Versions, Two Very Different Powertrains

The GT 63 SUV and GT 55 SUV use three axial-flux motors developed with Mercedes-owned YASA, the same type of tech found in the Lamborghini Temerario. Two share a housing on the rear axle for genuine torque vectoring, while the front motor only engages when extra power or traction is needed.

The GT 63 hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.7 seconds and 200 km/h (124 mph) in 7.2 seconds, with a top speed of 270 km/h (168 mph) with the Driver’s Package. The GT 55 makes 805 hp (600 kW) and 1,860 Nm (1,372 lb-ft), good for 3.1 seconds to 100 km/h. More telling is the 530 kW (711 hp) of continuous output both cars share: power that stays available lap after lap instead of fading after one launch. And yes, the GT 63 holds full boost for exactly 63 seconds, the GT 55 for 55.

The GT 53 SUV uses two permanent-magnet synchronous motors for 536 hp (400 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft), plus a two-speed gearbox on the rear axle. It reaches 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, tops out at 250 km/h (155 mph), and comes with the smaller battery only.

The Real Headline Is the Charging

The 800-volt battery comes with 106 kWh or 128 kWh of usable capacity. The GT 4-Door only gets the smaller pack and 600 kW charging, while the SUV’s big battery peaks at 710 kW. Mercedes says that adds up to 450 km (280 miles) of WLTP range in 10 minutes, with 10 to 80 percent taking about 12 minutes. Since 710 kW chargers are still rare, Mercedes also quotes 16 minutes on a 400 kW unit, which is still excellent.

The Formula 1-inspired pack is where AMG’s engineering really shows. Tall, slim cylindrical cells (105 mm high, 26 mm in diameter) keep the path from core to surface short so heat escapes quickly, and a full-tab design cuts internal resistance for faster charging and discharging. NCMA cathode and silicon-anode chemistry push energy density past 298 Wh/kg, while a non-conductive oil flows directly around every single cell to keep temperatures even under sustained load. The system also switches to 400-volt charging automatically when needed and supports five fast-charging standards, including NACS and CCS2.

WLTP range reaches 700 km (435 miles) for the GT 55 and GT 63, and 668 km (415 miles) for the GT 53. For a look at where the charging race is heading, check out BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery.

Chassis Tech That Throws Out the Anti-Roll Bars

The new AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension (standard on the GT 63, optional on the GT 55) replaces anti-roll bars with active hydraulic elements that control pitch and roll, paired with three-stage air springs. That means less dive under braking, less squat under acceleration, and flat cornering without a rock-hard ride. Rear-axle steering of up to 6 degrees is standard across the range, and the GT 63 gets carbon-ceramic brakes as standard.

The AMG RACE ENGINEER adds three rotary dials for throttle response, cornering behavior (from understeer to controlled oversteer), and nine-stage traction control. Seven drive modes include RACE with Drift Mode and Launch Control, while a Predictive Performance Manager borrowed from the CONCEPT AMG GT XX record run rations energy around a lap.

The V8 Soundtrack Comes Along, If You Want It

AMGFORCE Sport+ plays back recordings of a real AMG V8 (GT 55 and GT 63) or six-cylinder (GT 53), complete with simulated SPEEDSHIFT gear changes and seat shakers. When AMG showed the same idea on the GT 4-Door, opinion split right down the middle. Our take: as long as Silent is one tap away on the sound slider, it is a choice rather than a gimmick, and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N already showed that simulated shifts can make a fast EV more engaging.

Design and Interior: A Fastback on Stilts That Works

At 5,084 mm (200.2 in) long and 1,656 mm (65.2 in) tall, the GT SUV is 130 mm longer and 126 mm lower than the GLE 63 S, according to Autocar. Frameless windows, powerdomes, flared fenders, an illuminated grille, and six round taillights push it toward GT rather than SUV, while an active roof spoiler deploys from 150 km/h (93 mph) on the GT 55 and GT 63.

Personalization runs deep, too. MANUFAKTUR offers more than 60 paint colors, and for the first time AMG forged wheels can be color-accented, including matte black with a rim flange in Angel Blue, Sunny Lime, or Orange Flame. Matching seatbelts in Fjord Blue, Green Hell, or Orange Flame carry the accent colors inside.

Inside, the driver sits low, facing a 14.0-inch central display and a 10.2-inch cluster, with a separate 14-inch screen for the passenger. MBUX on MB.OS integrates ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini, just like the Maybach GLS. AMG adds its own apps on top. The AMG PERFORMANCE MENU shows live energy flow, aero status, and tire temperatures, AMG SET-UP lets you remap the steering wheel buttons, and AMG TRACK PACE logs more than 80 data points ten times per second, shows braking points in the head-up display, and can overlay an augmented-reality racing line from a saved lap.

The rear bench seats three, and cargo space runs from 607 to 1,740 liters (21.4 to 61.4 cu ft), plus a small frunk. The catch is weight: the GT 63 tips the scales at 2,585 to 2,715 kg (5,699 to 5,986 lb).

First Impressions: The SUV Might Be the Better-Looking GT

Nobody outside Mercedes has driven it yet, but early reactions have been surprisingly warm, especially compared to the divisive GT 4-Door. Top Gear’s first-look story said the SUV “may look better than the coupe,” praising the face without the sedan’s full-width light bar, though it questioned how much of an SUV it really is.

Autocar called it a “family supercar” and the world’s most powerful production SUV, ahead of the Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne Electric. InsideEVs went straight for the charging, arguing those specs are even wilder than the 1,153 hp.

SUV by Shape, GT by Nature

Mercedes-AMG boss Stefan Weckbach sums it up as “SUV by Shape. GT by Nature,” and for once the slogan matches the spec sheet. The GT SUV gets the bigger battery, the faster charging, and the cleverest suspension in the AMG.EA family, in a body that arguably looks better than the sedan. Weight, scarce 710 kW chargers, and the recorded V8 remain open questions. But with the tri-motor versions rolling out of Sindelfingen next spring, AMG is taking the fight straight to the Porsche Cayenne Electric with an SUV that is genuinely its own.
